About Tadamon

Tadamon is a newly established, UK-based organisation supporting Palestinians newly arriving in Britain and those already settled here. We aim to build practical, community-based support structures to welcome Palestinians escaping the genocide in Palestine and to strengthen solidarity, care and mutual support within the Palestinian community in the UK.

Tadamon is in the process of developing a national peer-to-peer mentoring programme that connects newly arrived Palestinians with peers who have experience of living in the UK. The programme is supervised and coordinated by a Peer Support Coordinator, who leads on supporting mentoring efforts, providing advice on practical challenges, safeguarding community members and volunteers and ensuring the needs and wellbeing of both mentors and mentees.

The role

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed Peer Mentors who can provide practical, emotional and social support to newly arrived Palestinians as they navigate life in the UK. Drawing on shared language, culture or lived experience, mentors will help new arrivals feel welcomed, oriented and less isolated.

Peer Mentors do not provide legal advice, immigration advice or undertake complex casework matters. Instead, the role focuses on practical guidance, accompaniment and signposting, with all needs assessments, matching and case management overseen by the Peer Support Coordinator and future caseworker, and carried out through Tadamon’s secure database.

Key responsibilities

Peer Mentors will:

  • Work with mentees to build supportive working relationships, maintaining appropriate boundaries, with no more than two mentees at any one time, depending on capacity.
  • Provide practical support such as:
    • Orientation to local areas and services
    • Accompanying mentees to relevant appointments where appropriate, e.g. initial visit to GP surgery for registration and orientation and/or supporting them to locate their nearest job centre.
    • Supporting with basic form-filling (e.g. GP registration, school forms, bank account opening)
    • Helping mentees understand everyday systems and processes in the UK
  • Offer emotional support through active listening, empathy and reassurance, flagging any safeguarding concerns that arise with Peer Support Coordinator
  • Help mentees connect with community spaces, social networks and relevant local services
  • Maintain clear boundaries and refer all complex needs, safeguarding concerns or specialist issues to the Peer Support Coordinator
  • Keep brief, agreed records of mentoring activity as required – this is part of the time commitment for the role

Supervision, safeguarding and mentor support

All Peer Mentors will:

  • Be supervised by the Peer Support Coordinator
  • Attend group reflective practice and one-to-one supervision every six weeks
  • Agree to and uphold Tadamon’s boundaries, GDPR, safeguarding and confidentiality policies
  • Complete required safeguarding training and induction before being matched with a mentee
  • Receive ongoing informal support and guidance where necessary throughout their mentoring period

Peer Mentors are not expected to work independently or manage risk alone.

Practical Support for Mentors

Reasonable expenses related to peer mentoring (e.g. travel, refreshments) will be covered in line with Tadamon’s expenses policy.

Onboarding Process

All Peer Mentors are required to complete Tadamon’s recruitment and onboarding process, which includes:

  • An initial informal interview to discuss the role, expectations and suitability
  • Completion of a basic DBS check (arranged and paid for by Tadamon)
  • Attendance of a 1 hour induction session covering the peer mentoring role, boundaries, safeguarding and signposting procedures
  • Completion of required training, including safeguarding training, before being matched with a mentee

Mentors will only begin mentoring once all recruitment, DBS and training requirements have been completed.

Essential Criteria for mentors

  • Ability to commit a minimum of 3 hours per week for three months (reviewable)
  • Willingness to work within a clearly defined peer mentoring role (not casework or advocacy)
  • Commitment to attending supervision, training and review meetings
  • Ability to maintain boundaries, confidentiality and professionalism
  • Empathy, reliability and strong listening skills
  • Commitment to equality, dignity and anti-racist practice
  • Strong connection to or understanding of Palestinian communities
  • Willingness to undertake safeguarding training and adhere to Tadamon’s safeguarding procedures

Desirable Criteria

  • Fluency in Arabic
  • Lived experience of migration, displacement or settlement in the UK
  • Experience in peer support, mentoring, volunteering or community work

All such matters are handled by the Peer Support Coordinator through appropriate referrals and support pathways.

In some cases, volunteers may wish to start working with Tadamon as Community Volunteers, supporting our events and community engagement efforts before taking on a mentoring role.
